Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has issued a warning to England ahead of next summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Friday's draw pitted the Three Lions against Uruguay and the 26-year-old - who has expressed a desire to score against Roy Hodgson's men at the tournament - is confident that he and his compatriots can beat England in their Group D clash.

“It won’t be easy but Uruguay can defeat England. Before the draw I joked with my Liverpool team-mates about facing England – now it is real and I warn them my objective is to score and win the game," Suarez said.

“The weather and our ability to acclimatise to Sao Paulo favour us.

“It will be special to play against Steven (Gerrard) and England. I’ve had many digs from my Liverpool team-mates but that’s normal.

“I’ll be happy if we both get through – but I want to score against England and win.”

However the Reds forward - who tops the Premier League scoring charts with 14 goals already this season - issued a note of caution saying: “The group is tough.

"Uruguay, England and Italy have an equal chance of topping the table. It’s going to be a terrific first phase of the World Cup.”

He added: “We do not want to be over-confident and the fact is Costa Rica aren’t easy to play against.

“Should we fail to beat them in our opening match, then the game with England will be a matter of life or death."
