Gonzalo Higuain expects to lead Juventus’ attack against Tottenham in the Champions League even though he is set to be absent through injury this weekend.

The Argentine, who scored twice and missed a penalty in the 2-2 draw in Turin last week, damaged an ankle during the derby against Torino last Sunday and is likely to be ruled out of the meeting with Atalanta in Serie A on February 25

Yet Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri is cautiously optimistic that Higuain, 30, may be fit to return in the Italian Cup – with Atalanta again the opponents – on February 28. Even if he does not make that fixture, he could be ready for the league meeting at Lazio on March 3.

That would leave Higuain clear to make the Wembley meeting with Spurs on March 7. Juventus need to win on the night, or secure a high-scoring draw, to advance to the last eight.

Allegri also has doubts over two players who started in Turin – attacking midfielder Federico Bernardeschi and full-back Mattia De Sciglio. Bernardeschi injured his knee against Torino while De Sciglio has a thigh problem.
