Jose Fonte has explained the reasoning behind picking the No23 shirt at West Ham.

The centre-back swapped Southampton for the London Stadium in January, arriving on a two-and-a-half-year deal for a £8 million fee.

The 33-year-old wore the No6 shirt at Southampton and continues to wear the same number for the Portugal national team.

But with the shirt number retired in honour of club legend Bobby Moore, Fonte turned to simple maths and some sporting icons for his next pick.

"First of all, No6 was not available - my favourite number - as it was obviously retired with the great Bobby Moore, so I couldn't get that one," he told Sky Sports.

"So I went for No23 because that was available, because two times three equals six and many great sports personalities use 23. I like that number."

Basketball great Michael Jordan and LeBron James have also donned the No23 during their careers.

David Beckham has also cited Jordan's exploits in sport as a key reason behind himself picking No23 when joining Real Madrid from Manchester United.
