Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock has explained why he let Jonny Williams join Ipswich on loan.

The midfielder, 20, has moved to the Championship side for three months after a successful spell at Portman Road last season.

Williams made 13 league appearances under Mick McCarthy last year, scoring once, and netted on his second debut for Ipswich to salvage a draw against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.

Warnock said today: “He was not getting on the bench because we have done well in that area and I think it is better for a young lad to go and get games.

“There were four or five clubs after him but I know Mick McCarthy will play him in the hole, where I want him to play. He enjoyed it last year. We will be able to bring him back when he is match fit. He will be a very important player for Palace in the long-term. I would rather he be playing for Ipswich than sitting in the stands watching us play.”
