Frank Lampard believes Chelsea should hand John Terry a new deal because of the defender's importance in helping young players break into the first team and also because of his special bond with the fans.

Terry is set to leave Chelsea, where he has been at since the age of 14, at the end of the season when his current contract expires.

Despite the 35-year-old saying on several occasions he wants to finish his career at Chelsea, the Blues are yet to offer him a new deal.

But club legend Lampard believes Chelsea should hand their skipper a contract extension because of the qualities he brings to the team off the pitch as well as on it.

"It’s a difficult one with John Terry," Lampard told Goal. "I think, for me, he’s been probably the best defender at Chelsea again this year. I think he’s a leader, he has a huge presence with the club.

"I would [give him another contract], but it’s a decision for the club to make.

"I know John wants to stay. I think he’s a help for the young players at the club, he’s a link with the fans at the club, but the decision will be made by the owners.

"Same as what happened with me, eventually your time comes. I’m not sure now is his time. I’ve seen him perform this year, and I think he’s done very well."
