Arsenal legend Jens Lehmann has pronounced himself “surprised” by his former manager Arsene Wenger’s decision to spend £35million on Shkodran Mustafi.

The former Valencia centre-back became the third most expensive player in his history late last month when he finally completed his move to Arsenal, where he is expected to partner Laurent Koscielny.

Wenger had initially hoped to land German international Mustafi for around £20m but ultimately ended up parting with near double that amount to get his man, a deal that surprised Lehmann.

"It’s unlike Arsenal to sign a defender for almost €40m - I’m surprised," he said on his return to his former club for the Arsenal Legends match against Milan Glorie on Saturday. "I think he’s probably the most successful manager in making money for the club.

"He’s always taken part in the Champions League, buying cheap and selling expensive.

"He was a major player in setting up the new stadium and at the same time always playing Champions League football."

Mustafi briefly sparked fears that he may be unavailable to make his debut against Southampton next week but Standard Sport understands the ankle injury he suffered against Finland in an international friendly is not too severe.
