Sir Elton John had more to celebrate than just a 2-1 victory for his beloved Watford today as the club unveiled the newly renamed Sir Elton John Stand at Vicarage Road.

John, who took over as chairman of the club in 1976 and has served as the club’s Honorary Life President, described the honour as “one of the greatest days of my life”.

Joined by his partner David Furnish and his sons Zachary and Elijah John made a pre-match speech from the centre circle where he thanked the current owners, The Pozzo family, for bringing Watford into the 21st century.

Reminiscing on his youth as a Watford fan John said: “When I was six years old I used to come and stand… I never thought I’d ever have a stand named after me. I never thought I’d sit in a stand.”

Around 15,000 fans serenaded John with a chorus of ‘Elton John’s Taylormade Army’ before John left the fans with words of encouragement: “Let’s continue to have success. Let’s get to the Premiership. Look at this ground! Can you believe it?!”
