Former Manchester United and England star Andy Cole has said that he doesn’t think Teddy Sheringham will ever apologise for snubbing him at Wembley on his England debut.

It is almost 20 years since Cole was ignored by Sheringham as he waited to enter the field of play against Uruguay.

Rather than wish Cole luck on his first appearance for England, he instead chose to ignore him.

“He was going to be substituted for me to come on to replace him, and he snubbed me on the line,” Cole said.

“I just thought to myself, ‘I’m making my debut here and Wembley is a packed house’. And I felt so small.”

Sheringham has never apologised for the upset his behaviour caused Cole and the 43-year-old doesn’t think he’ll ever see his former teammate admit what he did.

He added: “I don’t think his apology would come, because I honestly do believe that he believes he was not in the wrong.”

On the pitch, however, their relationship and understanding blossomed. They scored a combined total of 54 goals, won Manchester United three Premier League trophies, one FA Cup and the Champions League.

Cole was speaking to ITV's Sports Life Stories which is due to be broadcast at 10pm on Tuesday night on ITV4.
