Theo Walcott does not regret his 2-0 scoreline gesture as he was stretchered off with a season-ending injury in Arsenal's FA Cup victory over Tottenham in January.

As cigarette lighters and coins were hurled at him from the Spurs fans, Walcott mischievously taunted the travelling contingent - prompting a further hail of objects.

At the time Walcott - who went unpunished for his jibe - was unaware he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee causing him to miss the rest of this campaign and the forthcoming World Cup in Brazil.

But despite admitting nearby stewards were calling for him to stop, the winger has said he was only giving as good as he got.

“Me and Tottenham. We always do banter. They do it to me, I do it to them.

“I have seen some Tottenham fans since then and they have said if it was one of their players showing the score they would have loved it. It was all a bit of fun, that’s all it was.

“Some of the stewards were Spurs fans and were saying, ‘Theo can you stop now. Just stop it.’”

Walcott, still only 24, received the injury after catching his studs in the turf as he tracked Danny Rose.

He said with a smile: “I already had a dead leg before that so next time I’ve got a dead leg I will be coming straight off.

“It didn’t really seem too much at the time. I did hear a ‘pop’ but you can tell by my reaction afterwards I thought it was OK.

"No one expected it and it probably did hit me quite hard."

The flying winger, who has scored 69 goals in 281 appearances for Arsenal, is is not feeling sour.

He said: “I had Roy Hodgson and Arsene Wenger on the phone straight away and I’ve had so much support from team-mates and throughout the whole world."

Arsenal visit Stoke City today bidding to leapfrog league-leaders Chelsea, who travel to Craven Cottage.
