Gareth Southgate is expecting to know the outcome of Harry Maguire’s trial in Greece before announcing his England squad for next month’s Nations League fixtures against Iceland and Denmark on Tuesday afternoon.

The Manchester United captain is due to be represented by his lawyer in court on the Greek island of Syros on Tuesday, following his arrest for an alleged altercation in a bar on neighbouring Mykonos on Friday morning.

The centre-half would normally be an automatic pick, but his arrest and impending trial has thrown his inclusion into doubt, with FA bosses also set to discuss the situation today.

Southgate is thought to have already made a call on Maguire’s inclusion following a conversation with him but, with a two-hour time difference to Greece, he should have a clearer picture of the incident before publication of his squad.

Maguire has pleaded not guilty to charges after Greek police accused him and two other men of “violence against officials, disobedience, bodily harm, insult and attempted bribery of an official”. After appearing in court on Saturday, Maguire returned to the UK.

Southgate last year dropped Raheem Sterling following an altercation with team-mate Joe Gomez. Harry Kane is expected to be included in the squad, despite falling foul of quarantine rules.
