Gary Neville says he has been “wound up” by the sight of Gareth Bale “smiling on the bench” for Tottenham this season.

Bale returned to Spurs on loan from Real Madrid during last summer’s transfer window, a deal which was hailed as something of a coup.

However, the Welshman’s performances have not lived up to expectations, the 31-year-old having made just seven Premier League appearances, scoring only once.

Spurs have slipped to ninth, having lost four of their last five games in the league, and speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville questioned whether Mourinho would be able to use Bale’s talents - along with those of Dele Alli - to revive the north Londoners’ season.

“Is he going to bring Dele Alli and Bale round?,” Neville said. “I’m not saying he has to pander to these players because to be honest with you, Gareth Bale’s wound me up all season, just watching him smile on the bench.

“Dele Alli, to be fair, I’ve worked with him at England. He’s a brilliant talent but he should be doing a lot more, I want a lot more from him, he’s an outstanding player.

“Deliver on a great career. There’s a reason why his career’s doing what it’s doing, it’s not just Jose Mourinho, Dele’s got to get hold of it himself.”
