Javier Mascherano believes that Liverpool can win the Premier League title this season with Luis Suarez the key character in a confident team.

The Argentine defender, who played for Liverpool between 2007 and 2010, explained how he has been keeping an eye on his former side and has been impressed by their performances this season.

In an interview with the Sunday Express, Mascherano said: “They [Liverpool] are not many points behind so they can win the Premier League. Why not?

“I have watched Liverpool closely since leaving the club and this season you can see they have improved a lot. They are playing with more confidence and are doing very well.

“I am very happy for the lads because I still have some friends at the club like Steven Gerrard and Lucas. What is happening now is not only good for the club but good for them too. They have been there a long time and deserve this.”

Mascherano also highlighted the value of having Suarez in the attack as the club closed to within four points of league leaders Chelsea after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Swansea om Sunday.

He said: “For me, Liverpool have a key player, a fantastic player in [Luis] Suarez. He’s unbelievable. At times unstoppable. He’s a really great player for Liverpool and his country. I’ve played against him for Argentina against Uruguay and he’s really difficult to stop.

“He also has a lot of character and is an important part of what Liverpool, under [Brendan] Rodgers, are achieving.”
