Former Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen is due to undergo a medical ahead of a move to AS Roma.

The Barcelona defender had been linked with a return to Emirates Stadium this summer following a long-term injury to Per Mertesacker, but the Belgian is now on the brink of a switch to Serie A.

Vermaelan has made just seven league starts at the Nou Camp since leaving the Gunners for £15million in August 2014.

Barcelona tweeted on Sunday: "With the Club's permission, Thomas Vermaelen has travelled to Rome to undergo a medical with AS Roma."

It comes after Roma boss Luciano Spalletti confirmed on Saturday the club were attempting to strike a deal for the Barca defender.

"Walter [Sabatini] is working on this deal, although for now we cannot say that it is done," he told Sky Sport.

"Vermaelen is a player with experience and quality. He can build the play from the back and has great character.
