Everton manager Ronald Koeman confirms Wayne Rooney will play against Tottenham despite drink-driving charge

Standard Sport8 September 2017

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will play against Tottenham this weekend, despite being charged with drink-driving during the international break.

The former Manchester United man, who scored the final goal at White Hart Lane during Spurs’ 2-1 over Jose Mourinho’s side last season, was arrested and charged with drink-driving on Friday, but Koeman has revealed that despite being ‘very disappointed’ with his summer signing, he will be involved on Saturday.

"He will play this Saturday (against Tottenham),” Koeman said.

"If I see that Wayne is not in a physical or mental condition to play then he won't play.

"Obviously I am very disappointed by this situation regarding Wayne Rooney.

"We have spoken on Tuesday and the chairman Bill Kenwright spoke also to Wayne about this situation.”

The Dutchman also revealed that the retired England international will be dealt disciplinary action by the club at an appropriate time.

"In line with any disciplinary matter this will be dealt with internally at an appropriate time and that is all I have to say about the case of Wayne Rooney."
