New England manager Sam Allardyce says it is 'far too early' to make a decision on whether Wayne Rooney will continue as captain.

The former Sunderland boss was officially unveiled on his first day at St. George's Park on Monday after signing a two-year contract last week, but refused to give assurances to the man who skippered the Three Lions under predecessor Roy Hodgson.

Asked if the Manchester United forward would continue to captain the national team, Allardyce said: "That's far too early to make any predictions. I'll leave that until we meet all the players and I get all the coaching staff togther and plan for the international break in September.

"It's my first day and about getting my feet under the table."

Rooney, England's all-time leading scorer, led the team at Euro 2016 in France, where they suffered a humiliating loss to minnows Iceland in the round of 16.

Hodgson resigned following that defeat, but Rooney, who turns 31 in October, is relishing the opportunity to continue life with the Three Lions under Allardyce.

Asked about the appointment on Manchester United's pre-season tour of China, Rooney said: "Yeah, I think it's a good appointment for England.

"He will probably bring a different way of playing to England and hopefully it's a good way and we can be successful under him."
