Edwin van der Sar, linked with the director of football role at Manchester United, has signed a new contract at Ajax, taking his tenure as club CEO through to 2023.

Van der Sar, who won four Premier League titles and the Champions League during his six years at Old Trafford, has admirers back at his old club with United still on the lookout for a technical director.

The Dutchman has helped his boyhood club return to European prominence in recent years, having reached the Europa League final in 2017 and embarking on a sensational run to the Champions League semi-final last season.

With interest from elsewhere, Ajax have now tied the 49-year-old down to a new four-year deal.

The former goalkeeper wrote on Twitter: “Very happy with my contract extension at this beautiful club! I started as a goalie in 1991, three years ago I became Ajax CEO.

“We’ve had some difficult moments, but the good times are definitely back. And of course we want more in the future!”
