Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko felt his side fully deserved the 2-0 extra-time win over Newcastle that sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup, but also acknowledged a "great" performance from back-up goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

After the regulation 90 minutes failed to produce a goal at St James' Park, City took the lead through Alvaro Negredo's close-range finish in the first period of extra time and his strike partner Dzeko added a second soon after to seal the victory and a place in the last eight.

Dzeko was confident City could win without needing to go to penalties, telling Sky Sports 1: "We had a good pre-season, we worked hard and I think that we showed that in the extra time and I think we deserved the win."

Newcastle had chances to get on the scoresheet themselves but were denied by some fine goalkeeping from Pantilimon who kept the pressure up on first-choice stopper Joe Hart.

Dzeko said of the Romanian: "Yeah he was great. I think he's working hard in training and this is the second game in the Capital One Cup that he hasn't conceded a goal, so he's definitely improving."

On the prospects of City now going all the way in the competition, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international said: "There's still three more games to the final...we want to go to the final, that's definitely our target."
