Dougie Freedman sees positives after foggy farce

Dougie Freedman just about witnessed Crystal Palace earn a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road, where a freak fog turned the second half into a farce.

The Palace boss saw Watford score after 10 minutes through on-loan Aston Villa striker Andy Weimann, only for James Vaughan, on loan from Everton, to level just before the break.

The second half flew by under a blanket of thick mist, reducing vision and chances for the final 45 minutes. However, the result lifted Palace out of the relegation zone for the first time since Freedman took over last month and he is confident they will escape the drop.

He said: "The character they showed when going a goal down was great. You sometimes question players when you go a goal down and see what their response will be.

"There is a long way to go but that's good for us because we're building some momentum."

Watford manager Malky Mackay put his side's inability to make good of the lion's share of possession down to the mist.

"I have never seen fog like it," he said. "I think the Palace fans were singing because they couldn't see their own goalkeeper in their own half of the pitch. It was quite surreal and it made conditions haphazard in the second half."
