Attacking the end zone: Yedlin open to right wing position

Tottenham Hotspur's DeAndre Yedlin could emerge as an option on the right hand side of midfield for Spurs after featuring in the role during USA's opening Gold Cup victory against Honduras on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old signed a four-year contract with Spurs last summer, but has found regular game time difficult to come by since he arrived in north London from the Seattle Sounders in January 2015.

Yedlin made just one Premier League appearance for Spurs during the second half of last season but was still deemed worthy of a place in Jurgen Klinsmann’s USMNT squad this summer.

The former Germany international and Spurs striker has increasingly used Yedlin in an advanced position, which could now give boss Mauricio Pochettino food for thought ahead of the forthcoming campaign.

Meanwhile, Yedlin suggested in June that he is keen to be used further forward.

“It depends a lot on who you’re playing with. If there’s a right back behind me that likes to sit a little bit then I think right midfield is my best position.

“But if I’m playing with a right mid that likes to stay wide and doesn’t like to come inside and create that space for overlap. Honestly I think right back is my favourite position. Attacking in that position is very fun,” he explained.

Pochettino currently has Kyle Walker and new signing Kieran Trippier, plus Yedlin, at his disposal on the right hand side of defence and could be tempted follow Klinsmann's lead and deploy the American in midfield.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have completed the signing of Toby Alderweireld from Alterico Madrid, with the Belgian international penning a five-year deal.
