Danny Welbeck was on target from the penalty spot as Arsenal's Under-23 side beat London rivals Chelsea 4-1 in Friday afternoon's Premier League 2 derby.

The Gunners named a strong starting XI including the likes of Welbeck, Rob Holding, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Jeff Reine-Adelaide, and proved too strong for Chelsea at London Colney.

Holding headed the hosts in front from close range in the first half, and the Gunners were two goals to the good by half-time as Donyell Malen finished off a counter-attack.

Reiss Nelson's fine finish made it 3-0 to Arsenal, and despite Ike Ugbo pulling a goal back for Chelsea, the Gunners were quickly three goals ahead again as Welbeck finished with precision from the penalty spot.

Welbeck has made six appearances for the Gunners since returning in January from an eight-month layoff, starting once – and scoring twice – in the FA Cup victory over Southampton.

The forward missed Arsenal's FA Cup win against Sutton United on Monday after citing the non-league side's "plastic pitch" as a potential concern while he continues his rehabilitation from a long-term knee injury.
