POSITION

After many felt he was not given the chance to play as a central striker at Chelsea, Sturridge was given his head today, leading the line for Liverpool and occupying a traditional forward's position, occasionally drifting onto the flanks.

FINISHING

Sturridge could not have wished for a better start to his career in Red, opening his body and scoring with a first-time finish after just seven minutes, making good of Jonjo Shelvey's through-ball. His finishing would decline after that, though, missing three other chances, including a one-on-one.

SHARPNESS

His goal suggested a lack of game time over recent weeks was not a problem, but when he bore down on goal with 15 minutes gone he hesitated in possession and was unable to add what should have been a second goal.

PACE

One thing not lacking was pace. Sturridge spent his time on the shoulders of his markers, often well ahead of them before they had turned to face their own goal.

PROMISE

Scoring on his debut was as good as he could have hoped for, but he was unable to show manager Brendan Rodgers that he and Luis Suarez can play together, with the Uruguayan replacing him in the 55th minute.
