Jamie Cureton turns 39 this month but the veteran striker insists he can still score the goals to help Dagenham and Redbridge challenge for the play-offs.

Cureton has joined Dagenham on a one-year deal and believes Wayne Burnett’s side can build on last season’s ninth-placed finish and spring a surprise in League Two.

Cureton, who has scored 258 goals in 750 games during a 20-year career, said: “I think we can be dark horses and really do something this season.

“As long as we keep improving, there is no reason why the play-offs could not be within our reach. People bring me to their club to score goals, that is what I am known for. I believe I can score in every game and I will try to do that this year.”

Dagenham start the season at home against Morecambe on Saturday.

“The manager wants to move this club onwards and upwards,” added Cureton. “I think we are well equipped and can take a few by surprise.”
