Antonio Conte was pleased with Cesc Fabregas' performance in Chelsea's win over Manchester City on Saturday, and revealed he still fully believes in the midfielder's abilities despite his lack of game time this season.

Conte made just one change to his Chelsea side that took on Pep Guardiola's City team at the Etihad Stadium as the Italian coach replaced the injured Nemanja Matic with Fabregas - who last started a game for Chelsea in September.

Despite making just his second start for the Blues in the league this term, Fabregas proved important as he set up Diego Costa for the Blues' equaliser, which kickstarted a remarkable comeback win against City.

Conte admitted after the game, which ended 3-1 to Chelsea, that he still counts on Fabregas to play a role in his team as the Blues look to win the Premier League title this season.

"He [Fabregas] played a good game," Conte told Sky Sports. "I know I can always count on him."

The Italian coach also conceded that City made the game in Manchester "tough" for Chelsea, but Conte was happy to see his players' character shine through in difficult circumstances.

"I think today was very tough and the game was open until the end. There were lots of chances for both teams to score," Conte added.

"I saw lots of character from my team and that's very important to grow. But we must continue to work and improve."
