Chelsea star Willian urges caution over Premier League return

Chelsea forward Willian has urged caution when it comes to the resumption of the Premier League season.

Willian, who is isolating with family in his home country of Brazil, will discuss with Chelsea staying beyond the end of his contract on June 30 in order to see out the Premier League season.

A number of clubs were today pushing for the season to be wrapped up before July to avoid the contract chaos, but Willian, whose teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for the virus before the country was put on lockdown, says the Premier League must be careful about coming back too quickly - even if the games are behind closed doors.

"If we restart playing without fans but there's contact on the pitch and maybe we can spread the virus between us," Willian said. "It's not a bad idea but they have to know very carefully what's going to happen. Maybe a player can have the virus and we play against each other, you know?

"I play against someone and I get the virus then I go home after the game to stay with my family and pass the virus to my wife or daughters. So we have to be careful about that."

Chelsea remain in discussions with their players regarding a wage cut or deferral, with the Premier League having initially hoped for a blanket 30 per cent move.

It has now been left to individual squads to agree cuts or deferrals with their players, with Southampton and West Ham having done so already and Arsenal thought to be close.

Willian, however, says cuts to wages should be something the players agree to because they want to help, not something that can be forced on them.

"Everyone has to help, but for me personally this shouldn't be an obligation," Willian said. "Like you have to do this because you have to. ... I think you have to do if you feel you have to do. From your heart. Not an obligation that players have to do this or do that."
