Chelsea have a clear path to sign Kai Havertz after Bayer Leverkusen were on Monday night knocked out of the Europa League.

Leverkusen did not want to sell the Germany midfielder while they were still in Europe, but their season finished after they lost 2-1 to Inter Milan in Dusseldorf . Havertz scored but he could now have played his final game for the club.

Frank Lampard hopes an agreement can be reached for around £70million for the 21-year-old.

The Chelsea manager will hope a deal can be wrapped up quickly to give Havertz more time to settle in west London and prepare for the start of the new season, which is scheduled to kick off on September 12.

Chelsea are also expected to press ahead with plans to sign a goalkeeper and they are assessing left-back options as Lampard targets defensive reinforcements.

Ben Chilwell is their top left-back target, but the Blues have identified Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon as options.

While Havertz’s hopes of Europa League glory is over, Wolves play Sevilla on Tuesday evening hoping to set-up an all-English semi-final against Manchester United, who needed an extra-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes to beat Copenhagen.
