The title may have been wrapped up earlier this month but Chelsea's journey at the top was not without excitement.

Here, Standard Sport's Simon Johnson runs the rule over the Blues' Premier League campaign.

Season verdict

The manager

GETTY

Mourinho promised he would make Chelsea champions in his second season in charge and proved to be a man of his word. The weaknesses in the squad that caused them to finish just short the year before were put right with some quick, astute summer buys. While he went too far in claiming there was a campaign against his side after a run of decisions against them, Mourinho’s leadership was exemplary. His skills came to the fore when Chelsea began to struggle halfway through the season and he became more pragmatic with his tactics, to great effect.

Player of the year

GETTY

Eden Hazard’s magic on the ball has understandably been rewarded and he is the player all observers love to watch. However, without John Terry, there is a real prospect that Chelsea would not have finished top. He was the Premier League’s best defender and the reassuring presence he provided for his team-mates as captain, behind the scenes and on the pitch, cannot be underestimated.

What they need this summer

GETTY

If Chelsea are to provide a better challenge in the Champions League, they need to strengthen all over the pitch. Their priority will be a top striker to act as back-up or even to support Costa, especially now that Didier Drogba has left. Chelsea have been looking at Antoine Griezmann and Mauro Icardi but are also eyeing Premier League players Christian Benteke and Theo Walcott. Ambitious moves for midfield duo Paul Pogba and Koke have been discussed, yet buying Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin would be easier to achieve. At the back, Raphael Varane and Aaron Cresswell are wanted at centre-half and left-back respectively, while Rob Green and Asmir Begovic are in contention to replace Petr Cech, who is expected to leave after 11 years at the club.
