A Charlton fans group has urged fellow supporters not to buy season tickets for the 2019-20 campaign until the club’s future is clearer.
Owner Roland Duchatelet has been trying to sell the club for more than a year and fans are desperate for him to find a buyer that will end his unpopular regime.
A statement from the Coalition Against Roland Duchatelet (CARD) called on fans to make clear they will not commit to buying 2019-20 season tickets until there is more clarity about “what will be left at The Valley to support”.
They said: “It must now be apparent to everyone that the club is in chaos.
“There is no commitment to the staff, no commitment to the players, no commitment to the manager and hence no commitment to the fans. Why would any supporter want to make a financial commitment to Duchatelet in return? The club [should not] bring forward any season-ticket plan until it has a credible offer to make.”
Duchatelet last week demanded the EFL buy Charlton for £1, in a deal that sees him retain the club’s fixed assets including the Valley.
That demand would go against EFL rules. Even if he did give Charlton away, whoever takes on the club will inherit debts which cost more than £500,000 a month.
Duchatelet has also criticised the EFL for allowing him to buy Charlton in 2014 and claimed foreign owners should not be allowed to take over English league clubs.
Charlton are in the League One play-off places but there are major concerns about the state the club will be in next season, with manager Lee Bowyer, his assistant Johnnie Jackson and 10 first-team players out of contract in June.
