Brentford to start work on new 'Premier League' stadium in March

Giuseppe Muro6 February 2018

Brentford hope to start building work on their new stadium next month after the club received updated planning permission from Hounslow Borough Council.

The Bees are on track to move into the ground in Lionel Road late next year. Brentford revised their plans for the stadium which will reduce its capacity from 20,000 to 17,250 but mean it will meet Premier League standards if they get promoted.

The club, owned by Matthew Benham, believe the new design will be easier to build.

The Bees will leave Griffin Park and are expected to share their new ground with rugby union side London Irish. The new plans also ensure the stadium meets Premiership Rugby standards.

Brentford initially received planning permission in 2014 when they were in League One but they are now 11th in the Championship, eights points off a play-off spot.

The new plans will put the stadium up to Premier League TV standards, with 1,500 square metres of outside broadcast space and also upgraded media, broadcast and lighting capabilities.

Brentford said in a statement: “Site preparation works are progressing well and the project is on schedule to commence the next stage of construction in line with a stadium completion date in late 2019.”
