Barcelona will offer Neymar a new deal that will reportedly double his wages to £500,000 per week after Manchester United’s summer interest in the forward.

The Brazil international has settled well in Barcelona since his 2013 move from Santos, scoring crucial goals in last season’s Champions League triumph.

His club are now keen to down Neymar, whose contract expires in 2018, to a deal that would purportedly make him the third best player in the world after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “This is the season where we will sort out a new deal with Neymar.

“But we will try not to talk about the negotiations and to work discreetly until we can announce it.”

The offer of an improved contract comes several months after Manchester United identified the 23-year-old as the star signing they wished to make in the summer.

Neymar confirmed last month that United had held preliminary discussions with his representatives but that he had not received a firm offer.

"We had conversations [with United], but there was nothing concrete," Neymar told ESPN Brazil.

The forward has scored eight goals in seven La Liga matches so far this season, flourishing under the additional responsibility placed on him during Lionel Messi’s absence through injury.
