Arsene Wenger secures 100th European win as Arsenal manager with victory over Ludogorets

James Benge19 October 2016

After 20 years at the helm Arsene Wenger has just won his 100th European match as Arsenal manager.

Tonight’s 6-0 win over Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad was the 94th Wenger has won in the Champions League, to which he can add six Uefa Cup wins in their run to the 2000 final, which they would ultimately lose on penalties to Galatasaray.

It is one of two European final defeats that Wenger has endured during his Arsenal tenure, the second coming six years later in the final of the Champions League. Sol Campbell gave the 10 men, who had lost Jens Lehmann to an early red card, a first half lead but two goals in four minutes from Samuel Eto’o and Juliano Belletti handed the trophy to Barcelona.

Though those would doubtless rank among Wenger’s most disappointing moments there have certainly been plenty of memorable highs in Europe, including famous victories over Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Perhaps the best came in 2011 when Arsenal recovered from an early deficit to stun Champions League favourites Barcelona at the Emirates, Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin striking in the second half to secure a 2-1 win.
