Arsene Wenger today insisted the speculation surrounding Robin van Persie’s future is not unsettling the Arsenal captain.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini said this week he would be interested in signing the Dutchman this summer.

Van Persie’s contract expires at the end of next season and Wenger is doing everything in his power to prevent him following Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri out of the club. The Frenchman is adamant Van Persie is happy to stay and is hopeful he will not be distracted by Mancini or any other manager who talks about wanting to sign him.

Wenger said: “I cannot stop that (other managers talking). But it doesn’t bother me too much. Robin is the leader of our club and I would like to specify he is not at the end of his contract.”

Wenger said he was surprised to be charged with improper conduct by UEFA over comments he made about referee Damir Skomina following Tuesday night’s Champions League match against Milan at the Emirates.

Wenger, who has already served two touchline bans in Europe this season, clashed with the Slovenian referee after his side were knocked out despite a 3-0 victory.

When asked if he was justified in what he said, Wenger added: “Yes. I am quite surprised.

“I have been in charge for 200 European Cup games and the situation is becoming a bit surprising.”
