Arsene Wenger denies interest in Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has denied reports he is interested in signing Jonathan Woodgate from rivals Spurs.

Reports recently linked the Gunners with the injury-prone player but Wenger maintains there is no movement on the search for central defensive cover and he had not approached counterpart Harry Redknapp about a possible deal.

"That was not on our mind at all, completely out of the blue," Wenger said.

"I like Woodgate as a player, but we are not after him."

Wenger feels the imminent return of Sebastien Squillaci from a hamstring problem makes the defensive situation "much easier".

The Gunners boss said: "We are nowhere near (signing a central defender). At the moment I am not too confident."

Spurs boss Redknapp told the Daily Telegraph: "Is he going to Arsenal? No, not a chance.

"We want to keep him. He's out of contract in the summer, so if we let him out on loan then we're giving him away.

"He's had 45 minutes against a QPR team Neil Warnock sent up, but I think they were waiters from Shepherd's Bush. We beat them about 10-0 so it wasn't a great test."

Arsenal are expected to complete a £10million deal for Southampton starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 17, this week.
