Arsene Wenger calls for calm after dire weekend for Arsenal

Keep calm: Wenger looks at the positives after Saturday's loss to Liverpool
11 April 2012

Arsene Wenger has called for a sense of calm at Arsenal despite another difficult weekend for the club.

With Cesc Fabregas gone and Samir Nasri expected to follow imminently, the Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Saturday and saw two more players add to his growing inactive list.

Emmanuel Frimpong was red carded and Laurent Koscielny injured against the Reds, joining a growing list of unfit or suspended stars at the Emirates.

But the under-fire Frenchman, who is being encouraged by fans to bolster his squad with some big-name signings, appealed for perspective.

"We had eight players out and still had a good performance, so it is not all doom and gloom," Wenger said.

"We live under circumstances where every defeat is an absolutely a disgrace and an earthquake.

"We are at the start of the season. The target is to have a good team and good players."

Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish is one manager who has not been shy about splashing the cash, with the likes of Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Jose Enrique joining January recruits Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.

Suarez scored his second of the season as a substitute against Arsenal following Aaron Ramsey's own-goal.

Dalglish, though, defended Wenger's methods.

"Sometimes you go through stages in the season when it goes better than at other times. Arsenal are a fantastic football club and Arsene Wenger has done an unbelievable job here," he said.

"I suppose they've had better times than they've had recently, but it's not for us to pass any judgement on that."
