Empathy: Szczesny felt for opposite number Federici

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has said he knows how Adam Federici is feeling after his howler cost Reading the chance to reach the FA Cup final.

The Royals were locked at 1-1 with Premier League Arsenal in the 105th minute at Wembley, when Alexis Sanchez's tame shot dribbled between Federici's legs and over the goal-line.

And Szczesny - whose mix-up with Laurent Koscielny cost the Gunners the League Cup trophy in 2011 - felt for his opposite number.

The Pole clashed with Koscielny allowing Obafemi Martins to roll the ball into an empty net to hand Birmingham the cup on that occasion, but Szczesny says Federici should be remembered for a string of 'amazing saves'.

Player Ratings: Reading vs Arsenal

1/18

“I’d like to think that he should make the headlines for the saves he made, rather than the one mistake he made,” the goalkeeper told Arsenal Player.

“I thought he was terrific throughout the night and he was the reason the game was so tight, because he made four or five absolutely amazing saves.

“He was solid throughout the 120 minutes. It’s one of those things, I’ve been there and done that in the last minute at Wembley and I know how it feels.

“It must be difficult for him but I’m sure he knows himself that he had a terrific game and he deserves a lot of credit for that.”
