Per Mertesacker is about to become the star of a movie as the gentle giant of the Arsenal side finally gets to see his name in lights.

And the 31-year-old has the biggest names in football in his sight, as he showed with a tweet in which he trolled Cristiano Ronaldo over the release of the Real Madrid star’s documentary last year.

Strictly speaking Per Mertesacker will not be starring in the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved 1982 children’s book The BFG, the trailer for which was released earlier this week, but it certainly can’t hurt the Arsenal defender’s profile to be involved in a Steven Spielberg film.

Arsenal fans swiftly warmed to Mertesacker upon his arrival in 2011, creating an unforgettable chant for the Big F*****g German.

Ronaldo’s documentary was released worldwide on 9 November, with the Real Madrid star attending a star-studded premiere for the film in London.

In the film Ronaldo revealed he had “always felt special”, it remains to be seen what revelations will emerge about Mertesacker when The BFG, starring Mark Rylance in the titular role, is released next summer.
