Spain prepared for their trip to face England next week with a comfortable 4-0 win over Macedonia on Saturday night, which saw Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal score his first international goal.

Julen Lopetegui had major injury concerns to deal with ahead of the World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes in Granada after Diego Costa withdrew from his squad with a groin problem while defenders Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos also missed out with injury.

Lopetegui responded by playing a makeshift back four, and it worked with the home side withstanding the pressure of the visitors despite an early scare.

Just moments after Vitolo sent his effort wide, Macedonia worked a short corner to Darko Velkoski, whose resulting header was saved by Manchester United's David De Gea.

Spain began to settle into the game as the first half wore on, and were duly rewarded when they took the lead in the 34th minute through a bizarre own goal.

Velkoski, who had missed Macedonia's early chance, collided with one of his teammates as the pair attempted to deal with Dani Carvajal's cross from the right but instead directed the ball into the net with his head.

Spain, who hadn't been beaten in World Cup qualifying coming into the game, then doubled their advantage in the 62nd minute when Sevilla forward Vitolo headed in from close range.

There was again an element of good fortune to the goal, which started when Sergio Busquets found Manchester City's David Silva with a through ball before the midfielder's effort deflected into the path of Vitolo, who nodded home from close range.

Arsenal full-back Monreal made it 3-0 with his superb volleyed effort eight minutes from time before substitute Aritz Aduriz capped off the victory with his drive two minutes later.

Spain now travel to take on England, who beat Scotland 3-0 on Friday, at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday evening.
