Dayot Upamecano to Arsenal: Red Bull Leipzig defender a transfer target for Gunners

Dayot Upamecano is a target for Arsenal as Unai Emery seeks to bolster his defence before the transfer window shuts on Thursday.

Upamecano, 20, currently plays for Bundesliga club Red Bull Leipzig, where his performances at centre-back have led to enquiries from the Gunners.

Emery is looking to add to his defensive options with the new Premier League season kicking off in less than a week.

Arsenal have already signed William Saliba from St-Etienne, although the Gunners have loaned the defender back to the Ligue 1 club for the 2019-20 campaign.

As for current squad options, club captain Laurent Koscielny refused to travel to the USA for the first leg of Arsenal's pre-season tour, and Emery has signalled that he no longer considers the 33-year-old a realistic option for selection.

Koscielny is wanted by Rennes among other Ligue 1 clubs, while there is also uncertainty regarding the future of Shkodran Mustafi - with Arsenal willing to listen to offers for the 27-year-old.

Mustafi has been booed by Gunners supporters on multiple occasions this summer, with fans once again publicly turning on him during the 2-1 Emirates Cup loss to Lyon in north London two weeks ago.
