Arsenal moved two points clear at the top of the Premier League with a fortuitous 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Petr Cech was the hero for the hosts, who weathered a storm from the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic, both of whom should have scored in the second half.

It was Laurent Koscielny who was to grab the points in the 72nd moment, tapping in after Olivier Giroud had flicked on Mesut Ozil's corner. It was the only significant chance Arsenal had crafted until then, but how crucial could it be in Arsene Wenger's attempts to claim a fourth title?

Wenger gave his backing to his struggling opposite number.

"He has only just joined the club,' Wenger said when asked about McClaren's future.

"Newcastle is a very exciting project because it's a very big club and it's a fantastic and exciting job for a manager like Steve McClaren, but it is a long-term job."
