Arsene Wenger has said Arsenal will not spend 'stratospheric' money to bolster the squad this summer.

The Frenchman has brought Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to Emirates Stadium in the last 18 months, spending nearly £80million on the pair. But Wenger has vowed to remain prudent ahead of next season when Arsenal will look to mount a title tilt after an impressive run of results since the turn of the year.

The north London club capped a fine 2015 with a second successive FA Cup title, thumping Aston Villa 4-0 at Wembley, and look well-placed to challenge for league honours next year.

Wenger, however, is not prepared to break the bank in his bid to land a first Premier League trophy since 2004.

“We have not spent that kind of money,” he said. “People forget that for years we had to sell our best players and that was a very difficult period. That is the reality.

“Since we started to buy again, we have slowly come back to a more competitive level. But you speak maybe about stratospheric numbers where we will not be involved.

“Not at that level. It’s simple. I do not want to tell you how much money we have. But I have not made a clear decision yet for what I will do.

“Don’t rule anything out and I will not tell you as well how much money we will spend. But I’m always more focused on quality.”
