Arsene Wenger lavished praise on midfielder Mesut Ozil but is still demanding more from his record signing.

The £42.5 million playmaker had one of his most impressive games in an Arsenal shirt against Palace, laying on an assist for Giroud to volley in spectacularly for the opener. Ozil ended the game with just one incomplete pass and impressed with hard-work in defence.

His manager was thoroughly impressed by the 26-year-old’s all-around display, saying that he had loved watching his playmaker in full flow.

“He had a very good performance, he was very important in getting out from the back, getting out of tight areas. It’s a pleasure to watch the quality and intelligence of his passing,” Wenger said.

In spite of a dominant display in attack the Arsenal manager still wants more from Ozil, telling him again that he has to improve on a goalscoring record that has seen him find the net just 12 times in 73 games.

Wenger added: “What I want more of from him is a few more goals. I thought the rest, in a big derby of a game, was absolutely magnificent.

“He works hard, harder than people think he does. He’s not spectacular in his defence but he wants to do a job. He wants to help the team. What I liked in his game today was he made many runs without the ball.

“That’s a bit new because he likes to come to the ball. But today he mixed up his game better.”
