Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina has allayed fears that he may face an extended period on the sidelines with a back injury suffered in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Everton.

The Colombian international, pressed into action over recent weeks whilst Petr Cech recovers from a calf muscle strain, was hit in the back by Romelu Lukaku whilst competing for a cross.

Ospina received treatment after the collision and appeared to be struggling throughout the second half but was unable to be extensively examined by club doctors before flying off to international duty with Colombia.

However the 27-year-old does not expect to miss much action and is already almost recovered from the injury.

He told a press conference: “I’m already much better, between the day of the injury and today my recovery has been positive.

“I’m continuing with therapy but the pain is now minimal.”

Ospina has enjoyed his first extended run in the Arsenal side this season since the arrival of Petr Cech in the summer after Arsene Wenger’s number one picked up an injury in defeat to Swansea.

Limited opportunities have led to Ospina considering a departure from the Emirates at the end of the season but the keeper maintains he is doing nothing different now he is back in the Arsenal side.

“Playing gives me extra motivation but when I’ve not had the opportunity to play I’ve always trained to the fullest of my ability,” he said.
