Flintoff sidelined by ankle injury

12 April 2012

Andrew Flintoff has failed to recover from his troublesome left ankle injury and will not play for England in Sunday's fifth NatWest Series one-day international against India at Headingley.

The 29-year-old Lancashire all-rounder suffered discomfort in his ankle, which was operated on for the third time earlier this summer, following Thursday's win at Old Trafford.

Jon Lewis was drafted into the side in place of Flintoff in the only change from the side which went 3-1 up in the series on Thursday night.

Flintoff had a scan on Saturday after struggling through practice and has been ruled out of the match while further examinations take place to determine the extent of the damage.

Flintoff is due to rejoin the squad on Tuesday but by then England should know whether he will be fit enough to join the flight to South Africa for the ICC World Twenty20 championships next Sunday.

He has bowled only 50.5 competitive overs for club and country since returning from surgery midway through the summer and must now be rated as doubtful for the remaining three matches in the NatWest Series, the Twenty20 and the one-day series in Sri Lanka which follows.

Hampshire paceman Chris Tremlett was not available for selection due to soreness in his right foot.
