Fletcher will be fit - Smith

Scotland manager Walter Smith insists Darren Fletcher will be fit to face Lithuania on Wednesday.

The Manchester United midfielder sent his country on their way to a 6-0 romp with a seventh-minute opener against the Faroe Islands as they got their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign off to a flying start at Celtic Park. But was withdrawn from the action at the interval to be replaced by Gary Teale of Wigan.

But the Scotland boss insists the substitution was merely a precaution ahead of the next Group B qualifier in Kaunas, saying: "Darren had a strain down his back and his hip, so I took him off. He could have played the second half, so I do not think there will be a real doubt about Wednesday, but there was no point taking a chance."

Another victory in midweek is vital with World Cup finalists Italy and France, plus Ukraine and Georgia, also in Scotland's group.

But Smith was thrilled all his strikers were on the scoresheet in the six-goal romp.

James McFadden doubled Scotland's lead before Rangers forward Kris Boyd scored twice to take his international tally to four in three appearances.

Kenny Miller took the ball off McFadden and Boyd to score from the spot in the 30th minute after failing to find the net since joining Celtic in the summer.

Garry O'Connor replaced Miller in the second period before completing the scoring five minutes from the end as the Scots registered their biggest competitive win for 37 years.

Smith added: "It's pleasing when you put three strikers out and they all get themselves goals, albeit some with penalties.

"I was also delighted with Garry O'Connor getting one in the second half, which meant all four managed to score."
