Federer powers past Roddick

12 April 2012

Roger Federer produced yet another tennis masterclass against Andy Roddick to book his place in the Australian Open final.

Top seed Federer destroyed the sixth-seeded American 6-4 6-0 6-2 and will face either Fernando Gonzalez or Tommy Haas for the title.

The 25-year-old from Basle, Switzerland, is attempting to win a 10th career grand slam title and his third in Melbourne.

"I played incredible, I'm so happy," said world number one Federer. "The second set was definitely incredible.

"I've had a few good ones at the US Open against Lleyton [Hewitt] and other players, but it's incredible to do it against a top guy on a big court on a big occasion.

"Against players like him, I always enjoy playing. Not just because I've been winning, but I know how close he was at the US Open.

"He played well in Kooyong, too. We practised here, he beat me in practice here. To come out and beat him so convincing, it's a surprise for me too."

Roddick admitted afterwards: "I'm going to try to take this like a man as much as I can. He outplayed me. He played a lot better than I did.

"He deserves all the praise that he gets, not only for how he plays but how he handles himself."
