Farrell backs increase to stop switching

England rugby league captain Andy Farrell last night backed a plan to give players bonuses to stop them switching to union.

The Rugby Football League is planning a venture with Super League Europe to create Club Great Britain and offer contracts to an elite group of players.

Wigan loose forward Farrell, who is expected to lead Great Britain against Australia in the Ashes series in the autumn, said: 'It is the way forward. It is a massive temptation to go to union, where you can get a big club contract.' Farrell leads England in tonight's home international at Wrexham against Wales, who have been hit by the loss of six players, including skipper Iestyn Harris and winger Anthony Sullivan.

Union clubs Sale, Wasps and Harlequins have sounded out Wigan full back Kris Radlinski. Wigan have offered him a five-year contract, but a source said: 'He feels he is missing out on the big international stage.'
