FA investigate Oakwell brawl

12 April 2012

The Football Association have launched an investigation into the mass brawl involving Barnsley and Birmingham players at the conclusion of Monday's Coca-Cola Championship clash at Oakwell.

The incident was sparked after an initial spat between Birmingham striker Nicklas Bendtner and Tykes centre-back Antony Kay.

Blues substitute Neil Danns and home defender Bobby Hassell were given their marching orders after the final whistle by referee Mike Russell.

Both clubs could face disciplinary charges over the flare-up which occurred at the end of a 1-0 defeat for Birmingham which has severely damaged their chances of gaining automatic promotion to the Barclays Premiership.

An FA spokesman said: "The incident was reported by the referee and we are making further inquiries. We will be looking at footage of the incident."
