England struggle after strong start

Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen shared an 83-run stand but the start of England's new Twenty20 era was beset by familiar problems against Sri Lanka in Bristol.

England made a disappointing 136 for nine after Stuart Broad lost his first toss as an international captain, but the dismissals of Pietersen and the recalled Samit Patel were worryingly predictable.

Pietersen (41) was bowled by the first legitimate ball of left-arm spin he faced, while Patel - making his long-awaited comeback following concerns over his weight and work-rate - was lazily run-out at the striker's end for a duck.

Morgan, with 47 off 32 balls, had earlier set his side up for a much better total than they eventually stuttered to.

Michael Lumb and Craig Kieswetter fell cheaply before Morgan was dropped on 23 when Angelo Mathews spilled a straightforward chance in the deep off Suranga Lakmal, with England reaching halfway at 67 for two.

Morgan made the most of his life moments later, heaving successive full tosses from Thisara Perera into the onside for six. The all-rounder did not learn his lesson and served another full toss to Pietersen, who flailed it back for six more as the over cost 24.

Morgan fell three short of his half-century, held by Mahela Jayawardene off Malinga looking for another boundary and Pietersen was next out for 41 just after England brought up the 100 in the 13th over.

The next wicket was just as predictable. Patel, ending his two-and-a-half-year exile, lasted only three balls before Jayawardene's direct hit from point removed him in the most embarrassing fashion.

Ravi Bopara (19) hit his first four in 18 deliveries before the wily Jayasuriya parted his stumps with a quicker one.

Luke Wright was seventh man down when he holed out for nine in the 19th over, with Chris Woakes (seven) and captain Broad (duck) following as Malinga closed out the innings in style.
