England strike twice

England made two new-ball breakthroughs in the first hour of the second Test on a quick Kingsmead pitch.

South Africa, who chose to bat first on a sunny morning, lost Ashwell Prince in only the third over to James Anderson and then Hashim Amla in the 10th to Stuart Broad on the way to 14 for two.

Pace and bounce was evident from the outset, especially for Anderson from the Umgeni end.

Prince, perhaps playing a little low in back-foot defence, was surprised by the life in the surface - and there were no second chances with one which took the glove and flew to Graeme Swann at third slip.

Graham Onions, taking the new ball for the second consecutive innings in a Test match for England, also found conditions to his liking.

South Africa had to be watchful, and there were only 10 runs on the board when Broad replaced Onions for the 10th over.

The new bowler struck almost instantly too when the wristy Amla aimed across and missed a full-length delivery to go lbw.

Graeme Smith therefore had his third new partner of the day, Jacques Kallis the new man South Africa were looking to.

Anderson got another one to lift at Smith and land a painful blow on his left hand, for which he needed some treatment.

With an hour gone, the hosts still had not managed a first boundary. If the weather holds this week, a pivotal match is in prospect in a four-match series level at 0-0 after England escaped with a draw at Centurion.
