England begin one-day life under Moores

12 April 2012

England's long build-up to the next World Cup started by naming a side with three changes in coach Peter Moores' first one-day international as coach.

Having squared the Twenty20 international series against West Indies with victory at the Oval on Friday evening, England opened up the three-match NatWest one-day international series at Lord's with changes to their line-up.

Warwickshire batsman Jonathan Trott, who scored just 11 runs in his two Twenty20 appearances, is replaced at No 3 by county team-mate Ian Bell, who missed last week's matches with a groin strain.

Reliable left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom has been ruled out with a viral infection and is replaced by Durham's Liam Plunkett, who is making his first England appearance since being dropped after the third Test at Old Trafford.

Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar, who many people believed should have played in the two Twenty20 internationals, was also recalled and replaced Sussex's Michael Yardy as England began the long journey towards the 2011 World Cup in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

The tourists also made three changes to their line-up following Friday's defeat at the Oval with Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Devon Smith both passing fitness tests after missing out two days ago.

They returned at the expense of youngsters Lendl Simmons and Austin Richards while fast bowler Fidel Edwards was introduced to replace Darren Sammy.

Edwards was given an early chance to impress with captain Chris Gayle winning the toss and deciding to bowl first in conditions suited to seam bowlers.
