Emre facing FA probe into racism claims

14 April 2012

Emre could face a heavy punishment after being reported to the FA for an alleged racist outburst against an opposing player.

The Newcastle midfielder was surrounded by furious Everton players at Goodison Park on Saturday, in an incident that has been included in referee Dermot Gallagher's report to the FA.

Gallagher did not hear the remark that sparked the penalty area fracas after Newcastle had been awarded a first-half spotkick, but has informed Soho Square that an Everton player complained of being racially abused. Goalkeeper Tim Howard is understood to be the player involved, although Joseph Yobo and Joleon Lescott also reacted in a flare-up that ended with Emre lectured by Gallagher.

With the Kick Out Racism campaign gathering pace, the authorities seem certain to impose severe sanctions against Emre if the complaint is upheld. The FA have already made contact with Everton. A Goodison Park spokesman said: "The FA have spoken to us and we will be discussing the matter in the next few days."

An FA spokesman confirmed: "We have received the referee's report and he mentions that an allegation was made."

Newcastle skipper Scott Parker will be suspended for the club's FA Cup third round tie at Birmingham on Saturday after picking up his fifth booking of the season at the weekend.
